Functional Testing for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or drones is essential to ensure the proper functionality, safety, and reliability of these aerial vehicles. By assessing critical components through different procedures, these tests will help identify and address potential malfunctions or defects that could compromise the UAS’s safety and its operation. Also, to comply with the regulations and standards, a validation of performance in real-world scenarios is included and some testing of redundancy mechanisms, which are essential in the normal operation of the equipment.

ALTER has more than 30 years of experience in functional testing and equipment certifications, offering engineering solutions to ensure the quality, reliability, safety, and performance of products of highly demanding industries. In the case of UAS/Drones industry, we perform functional testing through Conformity Assessments, where we are Notified Body for RED Directive 2014/53/EU and DR (EU) 2019/945

Conformity Assessment with a Notified Body

When a manufacturer wants to conduct a Conformity Assessment in order to comply with the CE marking process or to obtain a certification for their products, the EU Type Examination is a crucial step in this process. This examination is conducted by a Notified Body who are designated by an EU country to assess the conformity of a product before being placed on the market.

ALTER as the first Notified Body in Europe to be accredited to assess conformity to UAS/Drones under DR (EU) 2019/945 for UAS/Drones, has successfully carried out various EU Type Examinations for UAS/Drones, mainly for those classes which this Examination is mandatory (Classes C1, C2, and C3).

At ALTER, we have the capabilities to conduct EU Type Examinations for UAS/Drones falling under the Open Category and for DRI Add-Ons. We have developed efficient testing campaigns in accordance with the current versions of the prEN 4709 standards. It’s worth noting that some of these standards are still in the draft phase, and future changes may be implemented.
