Considering the diverse environments in which Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) or Drones may operate, it’s fundamental to consider complementary types of testing to ensure the safety, reliability, integrity, and security of their operations.

In this case, ALTER is pointing to offer two complementary tests:

  •  Environmental (Climatic and mechanical): It helps to evaluate the UAS/Drone’s performance under various weather conditions.
  • Cybersecurity: It helps to identify and address vulnerabilities in the UAS/Drone’s software and communication systems. This will be vital due to its importance in future U-space.

These tests can be considered part of the CE marking or we can develop personalized test plans according to our clients’ needs.

Environmental Testing

Environmental testing serves as a valuable tool for evaluating, qualifying, and screening components and equipment intended for high-reliability applications. Its primary objective is to assess equipment performance under rigorous climatic and mechanical conditions. In the context of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or Drones, which often navigate various environmental challenges, including temperature extremes, humidity, and exposure to dust and water, comprehensive environmental testing is essential. This ensures that each tested aircraft can endure these conditions without compromising safety or functionality. Additionally, environmental testing ensures compliance with CE marking requirements.

Environmental Testing

At ALTER, our approach as a testing facility involves subjecting products to various controlled stresses during environmental tests, accelerating the identification of latent defects and evaluating the product’s ability to meet projects and regulations requirements. Specifically, within the UAS/RPAS/Drones industry, these tests are an essential component of the CE marking process, guaranteeing the safety, reliability, and environmental sustainability of your product.

Our environmental test is closely related to other testing in our laboratories, covering EMC, Radio Equipment (RED), Electrical Safety, and Functional areas.

Advantages of environmental testing

Conducting these tests is particularly crucial as they provide a detailed analysis of how specific environmental conditions impact components and equipment. This examination helps determine their suitability for operation in severe conditions or identifies necessary modifications required to ensure their effectiveness in challenging environments.

Types of environmental tests

  • Low and high temperature conditions.
  • Humidity tests
  • Dry heat
  • Temperature variations/thermal shocks
  • IP tests (dust, rain test…)
  • IK tests (kinetic impact protection)
  • Salt fog
  • Burn-in and lifetime tests
  • HALT/HASS- Highly accelerated life and stress tests
  • Solar radiation
  • Pressure Altitude
  • Fire generation and fire spread risk analysis

Environmental vibration testing is performed to validate a device’s reliability, performance, and structural integrity during its transportation and service life, preventing lifetime failures.

Accredited environmental testing laboratory

ALTER is accredited by the National Accreditation Body (ENAC) to perform environmental testing on electronic equipment in accordance with EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017, scope 345/LE808

Cybersecurity testing

Any device connected to the Internet is susceptible to network attacks. From servers, NAS equipment, wearables, activity or task monitors and routers can be compromised. To protect any product during its lifecycle, it is necessary to perform tasks that allow us to detect the attack points or vectors of our products.

When we talk about UAS/Drones industry, cybersecurity testing is essential to ensure the security, privacy, and reliability of UAS/Drones operations. It helps mitigate potential risks, comply with regulations, and build trust in the use of this technology across various sectors.
