Class Identification Label (CIL)

Home » UAS & Drone Certification » Class Identification Label (CIL)
The class identification label for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or drones is essential for categorizing them based on their specifications and physical characteristics, such as weight, flight capabilities, operational risks, etc. Each civil aviation authority has the capacity to establish its unique categories and classification criteria, leading possible variations based on the zone of operation and distribution.

In the European Union, starting from January 1st, 2024, the European Aviation Security Agency (EASA) has implemented the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945. This Regulation outlines requirements and characteristics for the design and manufacture of UAS/Drones intended to operate under the regulations and conditions defined in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947.

Being the first Notified Body accredited to assess UAS/Drones certifications under DR (EU) 2019/945, ALTER is widely acknowledged for our commitment to support and collaborate closely with manufacturers and operators in pursuing certification for their aircraft.

When the CIL is applicable

In the EU, the Class Identification Label (CIL) is mandatory and is applicable for those UAS/Drones that belongs to Open Category and Specific Category considering their operation subcategory.

How to obtain the CIL

In compliance with the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945, manufacturers and operators are required to demonstrate that their Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or Drones, designed for operation within applicable categories, meet the essential requirements outline for their Class Identification Label (CIL). This verification is achieved through the performance of Conformity Assessment procedures, organized into modules ranging from the least to the most stringent. This selection of procedures is proportional to the associated risk level and the required safety standards.

Conformity Assessment with a Notified Body

When a manufacturer wants to conduct a Product Conformity Assessment to comply with the CE marking process or obtain a certification for their products, the EU Type Examination is a crucial step. This examination is conducted by a Notified Body designated by an EU country to assess the conformity of a product before being placed on the market.

ALTER as the first Notified Body in Europe to be accredited to assess conformity to UAS/Drones under DR (EU) 2019/945 for UAS/Drones, has successfully carried out various EU Type Examinations for UAS/Drones, mainly for those classes which this Examination is mandatory (Classes C1, C2, and C3).  We can conduct EU Type Examinations for UAS/Drones falling under the Open Category and DRI Add-Ons.

ALTER’s Testing Campaign

We can be your ideal partner for conducting testing campaigns on your systems. We have developed efficient testing campaigns in accordance with the current versions of the prEN 4709 standards. It’s worth noting that some of these standards are still in the draft phase, and future changes may be implemented.

Here are some of the tests that can be performed at ALTER’s facilities:
